    Red face iCan't believe it!
It's now at the online Apple Store!

    $400 for an Mp3 Player!

I'd call it the Cube 2.0 as it wont sell, and be killed off in a short time...and it's not really functional.

Uuhh Steve, can I have a PDA now?

[Edited by elitemacor on 10-23-2001 at 02:33 PM]

I wonder how many ipods elitemacor has since owned, including iPhones.

The price was high, but not long previously to this, DVD's hit the market. I paid 400 (approx $700 at the exchange rates at that time) for my first DVD player. I can now get more capable DVD players for less than 10% of that.

The article correctly states that this started the turn-around of Apple, and what was it that turned Apple around? Not the iPod itself, but the design of the iPod including revolutionary user interfacing. This emphasis on both hardware design and user interface design is the reason Apple is so strong now.

    Thanks Jonny! (Ive).

I am seriously thinking of getting out of Windowsworld and the new 24" iMac looks great!:D

From the listed specs this will really rock.

Anybody have advice on whether I should wait for Leopard to come out or not?

Since Core 2 Duo is 64-bit, there's really no reason to wait if you need/really want a new computer right now.

Sometime I wonder if people actually use the products they talk about here.

The Rolling Stones have been in the iTunes music store for over a year. The currently have over 59 albums there and a new ep was released, I'm Free, just a couple of weeks ago.

Frank Zappa was on iTunes last summer and has since been removed. It was basically the albums that RYKODisc had re-mastered and released. There appears to be something going on with the Zappa Family Trust and RYKODisc over the rights.

Led Zepplin has never appeared on iTunes. However, Radio Head was on for a short time, but everyone who like Radio Head has already bought their one good album, The Bends.

Actually I think KID A is one of the best albums of all time and I am a first gen Beatles Fan. KID A is so original and not like much else out there...especially when it was first released. Kind of like when Revolver or Pepper was first released. Now so many other records have repeated that that British "cover" band.... OASIS!

    Wirelessly posted (iPhone 3GS: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8F190 Safari/6533.18.5)

Reception to the original iPod launch was mixed. Our own forum responses are interesting to look back on, 10 years later.

At least we're all pretty consistent with our critiques of Apple product launches, hahaha.

The board that oversees what the top 3 executives do at Apple knows more than you about production issues of MILLIONS of hi-tech devices.

Anybody familiar with production and distribution issues knows that despite excellent planning there may be issues during production that cannot be forecast.

Selling and shipping MILLIONS in a few weeks is a exactly fiasco for whom?

Thunder.... trying to educate some people is such a waste of time. :)

I'd challenge on him that his Walmart actually has them. Even here where I live (which is not the high tech capital of the world), they have been hit and miss. They have them one day and gone that day. Just last week, I checked Walmart inventory on-line, said they had what I wanted, drove there within the hour and it was sold.

Sorry, I don't think adding the Beatles is a big deal at all.

Not of itself no - but imo a remastered collection will sell millions. How many fans, old and new, will shell out again to hear them?

My 2 cents: The MacBook are definitely going to be updated this month. Most likely tomorrow. Why do I think this? AppleInsider has reliable sources, they have never completely been wrong. The MacBooks will get Core 2 Duos (1.83, 2.0, 2.16), 802.11n cards, and possibly hard drive & RAM increase. Realistically we won't be getting a dedicated graphics card, bigger screens, or firewire 800.

Enjoying my Core 2 Duo MBP.
Precisely, except maybe not 2.16 GHz

Well... but at least it's not Apple's fault, because they didn't produce the driver. Therefore it's actually not a concern of Apple's but of the driver's producer's.

On the other hand Apple did include it into it's OS seemingly without testing it thorougly, and that is, of course, a concern of Apple's. So they will have to work together to get rid of that - and I'm sure they will - and I may be smug again. :p

###Just my two cents.... it is exactly this kind of "attitude" that make tech and Windows people want to throw up. Of course, it's Apple's concern and it SHOULD be yours. If it comes with the's Apple responsibility...period. As an Apple user, i'm embarrassed more and more by the Apple community. Gonna have to start painting over the Apple logo on my PB.

It's not that Apple isn't capable of coming up with a version of iOS that would run well on the 3G hardware. Of course they could if they wanted to. What it comes down to is Apple having to draw a line in the sand and phase out support at some point. They can't keep spending money to develop for it forever. The 3G is nearly 3 years old. I think it has served it's purpose well, and now it's time to let it retire in peace. It's worked a long time and is tired.

Personally I am surprised anyone is holding on to older phones like that. There are such good deals to be found in selling old hardware that will allow you to upgrade every year if you want with little or no expense to do so. When the 3Gs came out, I sold my original iPhone online for $160, so the upgrade only cost me $40 plus tax. It was well worth it. And when iPhone 5 drops this summer, I will do the same thing. Not too shabby if you ask me.

I totally agree. However, the 4.x was sold as a viable update to my phone, and my older iPod Touch was upgraded automatically. Had I known it would have rendered them quite useless, I would have not agreed to the upgrade. Also, there is no way (that I can tell) to downgrade to a previous IOS (I'm not overly geeky). I am not asking for on-going support, rather that the phone that I paid for works for its lifetime. It is Apple's fault for not providing a reasonable explanation of what the consequences would be or providing an alternative to that IOS.

Great, another store that carries iPad 2 but won't ever have any in stock. LOL.

Unfortunately I think 80% of iPad 2 supply is going to scalpers and resellers, the moment Apple stores get them in stock they sell out and craigslist is then flooded with heavily marked up iPads. It's kind of ridiculous.

On a related note, isn't it a bit weird Apple hasn't announced any sales figures yet? They're usually quick to brag when devices hit a million sales in a short amount of time.

They can't come up with a million sales yet because they were not able to produce the units before they launch it. That's why there is short supply on stores and people can't have it ASAP.

It's like apple is "testing the water before they cross the river".

They made the supply low so it will look like it is really on demand. and make the people drooling waiting.

If they will come up with the number, probably it's made up!

Reading the reactions to iPod in 2001 were hilarious. It shows how far we've come in our trust of Apple, I'm not speaking as an expert. Now it seems like if Steve Jobs breathes we'll buy it. I am sad to see the iPod go I have 120gb and may have to upgrade before they go. I use every kb of mine.

I wish I had this many sensor readings. All I get is the themperature in once CPU core. :-(
Is there any kenel extention to install so I can get the hard drive temp (more important to me than the cpu) and the other stuff? Or the fan readings?

I have a stock black Macbook with some more RAM (see sig). PLease PM me if you know something for getting all the sensor readings.

I shall (briefly) ponder the wisdom of your words when I'm putting in a 10-hour day tomorrow on the Mac.

OS X vs. Windows for work argument depends on your work.

Many industries do not have a versions of their software or database apps that run on OS X. Unfortunately, I happen to work for one of them. My industry has thousands of software packages, none of which run on OS X. I am not alone. In fact I would bet that >80% of businesses today run some software which will not run in OS X.

Being able to run Vista on a Mac is a lifesaver for me.

My dad got me an original iPad for my birthday at BB and went to return it last Monday and told them he was gonna get the new one at an Apple Store so they went in the back and said they have a few iPad 2s and got a 32gb AT&T one. Was yesterday supposed to be the first day BB was selling the 2?

When you want to do a return and get new one elsewhere, all of a sudden, they "have them..."

Cost aside for the moment, it's Microsoft's decision to sell such a bewildering number of versions that I find so remarkable. I think it says a lot about Microsoft that they can't seem to settle on one implementation of Windows that would suit all users equally well. Apple has seen to it that the Mac is a Mac. Windows is now like a half-dozen vaguely different things, depending. Another level of confusion, introduced deliberately.
