I'm sorry if my comment came off as being snide.

But it really bothers me when people post how wonderful an app is and how useful it is and how it completely replaces a much more expensive app. When in reality it is only a simple consumer level product.

Others read this forum and buy Pages thinking that they can eliminate the use of Word. Then they find out that it really isn't that compatible with Word files. If you email a windows user a .doc file exported from pages, 7 times out of 10 they have problems with it.

Most pro printshops, publishers, law firms etc. only except word .doc files. Almost all law firms require a revision history. Collaboration tools are useally also required. Word handles this expertly. Plus it has table of contents tools, book publishing tools, bibliography tools, direct faxing, multitudes of custom templates, VB programing hooks, etc. etc. None of this has an equivalent in Pages.

I'm glad you found a solution to your problem and I am glad that Pages satisfies your needs for word processing. Maybe someday it will move out of the "consumer" ranks and into the "Pro" ranks when more functionality is added. Apple seems to know the niche that they are addressing very well.

I've been using Pages since it first came out, and I've exchanged documents that were exported from Pages into Word format with other users without any problems. In general, of all word processors that I've worked with (and I've tried out quite a few), Pages has some of the best Word compatibility that I've seen. (That's not to say that I haven't seen some things move - i.e. graphics - on export, but the errors, if any, are generally minor).

To go back to the CAD analogy, in years gone by AutoCAD was the only CAD program, for all intents and purposes. Any new CAD programs were frequently measured, first and foremost, by their ability to exchange documents with AutoCAD. Of course, there was never a perfect ability to make such exchanges, as AutoDesk (makers of AutoCAD) kept the definitions of the dwg file format secret, and usually changed it from one version to the next. So, it made import/export difficult for the competitors, much like what MS does with Office. Did the fact that the exchanges weren't perfect mean that companies who chose to use other CAD packages weren't really professionals? No.

    Again, these are just tools.

Will Pages fit the bill for everyone? Of course not. Does MS Word fit the bill for everyone? No. That's why there are different products out there. Certainly, Pages is not as feature rich (you named some specifics, though you missed some of Pages features in your citation ;) ) as MS Word. It's also a much younger program. Is it going to be a Word Killer? Probably not for the foreseeable future. But it's quite capable of doing what probably 90% of what the Word users out there use Word for. If the other 10% are stupid enough to buy it without checking to see whether or not it has the features that they need to do their jobs, then they deserve to have their money go to Apple.

Oh, and what's this about "pro print shops" only taking Word files? I've never been to a print shop that didn't like PDF.

good job everyone, including plutonius and appleguy

now it is basically one spanking new 6-villagers game, starting tonight, with one wolf, one seer and likely one hunter.
with a twist: both the seer and the hunter could also be the wolf.
    everyone is suspect.

make it a short night guys, see you all tomorrow

    This is a disgrace.

Standing there watching this unfold and doing nothing but film and laugh at the poor victim.

Nobody deserves to be kicked the head repeatedly, i hope they catch those 2 girls and lock them up and throw away the key!

As for those 'defending' the employees for not intervening, shame on you... The 2 girls clearly did not have any weapons, hence the brutality of their attack using their fists and feet, a whole 3 or minutes go past, if they had a weapon they would have used it by then instead of taking such horrific actions like stamping on the victim's head!!! There were at least 4 full grown MEN capable of stopping that and it takes a female OAP to at least try... Cowards.

No, i don't think it is sackable to not intervene, but it is just as cruel as taking part IMO, i hope they live with that image in their heads forever.

Ahhh.... Google bought that. And given Android is based on open source, don't you think your argument on OSX is rather weak?

Apple bought OS X too. :D

I'm arguing that both were massive undertakings by both parties. My OS X example was tainted with sarcasm if you didn't catch the little  there.

Both OS X and Chrome OS (and Android, and iOS) borrow heavily from others, either through acquisitions or from the open source community. To claim Google is any inferior here is just trying to stir the pot, especially calling the poster Troll, that is just insulting and uncalled for.

Both companies deserve props from providing the software they do, neither deserves scorn that some posters here like to dish out.

ChromeOS has pieces of Linux...I'll give you that. But Google didn't do much...
Android is Linux. They didn't make that either.

So what ? OS X is Mach/XNU, Apple didn't make that. It's also a GNU/Berkeley userland, Apple didn't make that either. Again guys, drop the non-sense competition, this thread is about a release of OS X, not some type of Google bashing contest.

I hope MobileMe will be free. Syncing with Google via exchange on iOS is decent but there are too many quirks, like not being able to put in custom fields for contacts phone numbers and email addresses (i.e. John Home), and archiving messages when the trash can button is pressed, etc. Also, I want to move away from google calendar because it has been so unreliable these days. So sick of seeing "Oops, we were unable to save this event. Please try again later" after I just spent 2 minutes typing it all in.

my fear is the democrats will try to use this a political gain and that is so very wrong both to the military and for this good event.

It turns a great event into worthless BS. It was just luck of the draw that a Dem was in power when this happen and it was only a matter of time. I already am watching some people try to turn it into political gain and it makes me sick.

    Yeah, my thoughts exactly.

    Thats whats wrong here.

Right, it's like Apple researched every mobile technology by itslef without infringing anyone's patent.

I don't know what else Apple can add to its existing iPod line besides small improvements... a few of their recent "revolutions" (buttonless Shuffle, touch-screen nano) have actually been steps backward, imo.Absolutely, man I hated the Dentyne Shuffle. Of course, this happens from time to time iPod 3 was a loser with the 4 touch buttons at the top. The nice thing about Apple, when they make true mistakes, it shows in the next revision when they come back to what works.

I think the current iPod line is just about perfect. I just wish the Shiny Back would go away for the Classic and the Touch. Looks pretty for the first day... then even one scratch blows that.

just goes to show people still want to be able to see flash on their iphones reguardless of how bloated

Nonsense. It means nothing of the sort. Check back in 6 months, 3 months or even 1 month and see a) how many ppl are still using it, and b) how many ppl are buying it once the first blush of excitement is over.

Opera's browser went nuts when it was released (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=897606). It was the Bellepheron to the Chimera of Apple's Safari lock-in. Now where is it? It doesn't even appear on the Top 200 Free (http://appshopper.com/bestsellers/free) list.

Actually, the irony is that the people who are looking at you and judging you based on your phone are the snobs.

thats true... whats with people judging others by the phones they use, or the products they love... thats worst than judging a book by its cover...

You could always do this. I have my own domain name and host on MobileMe.

Though I haven't figured out how to use an email address using my domain name and have mail hosted via MobileMe. I wish they would add that feature.

as do i. right now you cannot use a custom domain name on mobileme email. thats why i use Google Apps, which offers this MX record functionality for free.

Im actually kinda shocked android has more devices using its OS than Apple does.

Why? Any manufacturer can grab it for free instead of paying a fee. Makes sense they would flood the market with lots of copycat Android models. Just look at the Asian market where there are hundreds of Android phones, many of whom are Android in name only (cannot use the Android App market, etc.) but useful to the knockoff phone manufacturer who can grab it free, slap it into their devices and sell their stuff as "Android" to the marketplace. Given that there are hundreds of different Android model phones, it's a wonder it isn't even more popular than it is.

That doesn't say anything remotely similar to "envisioned by apple." either. In fact, from your own article, try this link :

Let's not give a bigger role to Apple than the one they played.

Okay, I am trying to play a theoretical "game," if we start bringing in factors such as "Apple will work it out," obviously, my whole argument is useless.
We must try to PREDICT what the next MBA will be in terms of WHAT WE HAVE currently.
You are saying that MBA are not meant for gaming and other stuff. I KNOW, i am not saying I will play crysis 2 on max settings, you are placing my argument on the extreme side.
Understand that what im saying is that nearly all of us are casual gamers. we want to play a game here or two, and as High Schooler, I will play more games.
But my point is that even if we get a 40% boost in our CPU, it is near useless.

For example, lets say you have 100/100 in a test. Having a theoretical 40% boost will give you a 140/100. I mean, thats cool. Overkill. That is currently the CPU we have. We have enough to accomplish our tasks, and any more would be an overkill in the things we need our computer to process.

On the other hand, on the GPU side, you have a 80/100 (which is what the NVIDIA 320m is) and we see a 30% performance drop, that will result to a 42.5/100. At lower levels, difference between a 80/100 and 42.5/100 is the difference between a pass and a fail.

Of course, having a better CPU might be fulfilling to you and might give you the sense that you are the "latest in tech," but seriously, it is not about the CPU any more, it is about SSDs, ergonomics, GPU, and ultimately, Software.
